Wacken Open Air, held annually since 1990, has transformed from a small village event with around 800 attendees into one of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world. It now attracts approximately 85,000 participants from various countries who come to enjoy the music and atmosphere.

In the documentary "Wacken – Hearts Full of Metal," which premieres in theaters on May 13, festival founders Holger Hübner and Thomas Jensen provide insights into the event's beginnings. They recount that the idea for the festival originated from a spontaneous beer-fueled decision, emphasizing their desire to have fun.

Director Cordula Kablitz-Post discussed the film's creation in an interview with Kultur – das Journal. She highlights the significance of the founders' personal stories for the documentary and how they reflect the festival's evolution.

Wacken Open Air has not only shaped the metal scene but also had a significant impact on the culture of festivals as a whole. The event has become a staple of the international music calendar, attracting fans and bands from around the globe.
