Pressure is mounting on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer after the Labour Party suffered significant losses in the local elections. Within the party, calls for Starmer’s removal are growing. Health Minister Wes Streeting has already announced his resignation, expressing a loss of confidence in Starmer’s leadership.
Streeting, viewed as a potential successor, stated in his resignation letter that it would be dishonorable to remain in government while Starmer cannot lead the party into the next general election. Other senior members, including Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, have also withdrawn their support for Starmer.
The situation within the Labour Party is tense. MP Catherine West has publicly called for Starmer’s removal and is seeking support. The debate over the party’s future could lead to a contest of ideas, as Streeting emphasized.
To force a vote on the party leadership, an opposing candidate needs the backing of 81 MPs. This could trigger a ballot among Labour members, with several candidates potentially vying for Starmer’s position.
