In the ZDF sports studio, Julian Nagelsmann spoke cautiously about the potential return of Manuel Neuer to the German national team. The national coach will announce his squad for the FIFA World Cup on Thursday, which takes place from June 11 to July 19 in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
Oliver Baumann, the current goalkeeper for the national team, remains optimistic. After the 0-4 defeat against Borussia Mönchengladbach, he stated, “This is my status; I have no other information.” Nagelsmann had previously emphasized that Baumann is the number one following the injury of Marc-André ter Stegen.
Neuer, who was substituted during the 5-1 victory against 1. FC Köln due to calf problems, may still be awaiting the results of an examination. The 37-year-old announced his retirement from the national team after the quarter-final exit against Spain, having played 124 international matches for Germany.
If Neuer returns, it would be a tough blow for Baumann. Neuer, who became a world champion with Germany in 2014, has experienced disappointing early exits in the last two tournaments. On Friday, Neuer extended his contract with FC Bayern Munich until 2027.
