In Saxony-Anhalt, a debate has begun on how to prevent a possible takeover of government by the AfD. According to Deutschlandfunk, various political and legal options are being discussed. The background is the party’s rising poll numbers, which could make it the strongest force in the next state election in 2026.
Among the options under discussion are an amendment to the state constitution to make it more difficult to elect a minister-president with AfD votes, as well as closer cooperation among democratic parties. So far, however, no concrete decisions have been made. The debate reflects growing concern about a political shift in power.
The AfD itself calls the debate undemocratic and speaks of an “exclusion of voters’ will.” The other parties, by contrast, emphasize that it is about protecting the constitution and the democratic order. Saxony-Anhalt is the first federal state where the AfD is clearly ahead of the CDU in polls.
