The German government has issued a temporary ordinance allowing public viewing events during the 2026 men’s football World Cup to continue after 10 pm. The regulation applies from May 20 to July 31, 2026, and responds to requests from the federal states, which lack their own authority over noise protection law. The Bundesrat has formally approved the exemption.

The World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19 in Mexico, Canada, and the United States. Due to the time difference, many live broadcasts in Germany fall during the night hours between 10 pm and 6 am Central European Summer Time. The ordinance allows municipalities to review and approve each event individually – there is no general entitlement to permission.

The general noise protection regulation takes effect at 10 pm to protect the population’s nighttime rest. For the World Cup, which features 104 matches over 34 days, the German government has now created an exception. The local authority decides on a case-by-case basis after careful consideration whether a public viewing event is permitted.
