Retirement at 70: Debate After Denied Media Report

A media report about a possible increase in the retirement age to 70 has sparked debate, but several parties have denied it. According to Tagesschau, a 13-member expert commission is to develop proposals for long-term pension reforms.

The “Bild” newspaper had reported that the expert commission favors a gradual increase in the retirement age from 67 to 70, effective from the early 2060s for those born after 1990. Chancellery Chief Thorsten Frei (CDU) called this speculation and urged caution. Members of the commission and the Federal Ministry of Labor also denied the report. The ministry emphasized that the commission is working professionally and trustfully toward consensus decisions.

Within the Union, there are differing positions. Frei considers adjusting working life to increasing life expectancy reasonable. Sepp Müller spoke in favor of his generation working until 70 in the 2050s to stabilize the pension level. However, the chairman of the CDU’s employee wing CDA, Dennis Radtke, warned that many people cannot work until 67 even today. An increase should only be possible if tied to life expectancy and if disability pensions are improved.
