As reported by the Süddeutsche Zeitung, artistic director Andreas Beck presented the program for the 2026/27 season at the annual press conference in the Cuvilliés Theatre. The selection ranges from Goethe’s Faust and Brecht’s Threepenny Opera to Aeschylus’ The Persians, the earliest surviving work of European theater.
Beck emphasized that the famous texts serve as a warning for the present day. He appealed to the audience to protect the value of art and culture, “so that it doesn’t get squandered by indifferent politicians one day.” The productions aim to critically question traditional works: house director Alexander Eisenach announced that not every word must be spoken and that others could be added.
A focus lies on literature related to war and Nazi Germany, such as Max Frisch’s The Fire Raisers, directed by Miloš Lolić. King Lear will be staged by house director Elsa-Sophie Jach, who previously gave Romeo and Juliet a feminist interpretation. The title role will be played by 84-year-old Manfred Zapatka.
