According to the FAZ, the city councilors voted on Thursday evening in favor of the recall motion submitted by the WsR, CDU, Greens, and UMMA factions. The council chamber was fully occupied, and at times more than 300 participants followed the livestream.

Rendel now has a week to consider his options. If he resigns voluntarily, a new election will take place on September 27. If he remains in office, eligible voters will decide his fate on that date via a citizen referendum.

The recall motion was preceded by nearly three years of conflict between Rendel and the city councilors. He is accused of inexperience, lack of teamwork, and stubbornness. He also faces criticism for not having thoroughly investigated the commission affair of his deceased predecessor Thomas Jühe (SPD). In 2016, Jühe had signed a commission agreement with a department head that earned the latter around 2.1 million euros in additional income. The city councilors demand the money back, but Rendel opposed the corresponding resolutions.
