The announcement is part of a pre-election push by the Victorian government. The SEC was revived in 2023 by Allan’s predecessor Daniel Andrews, after being privatized in the 1990s under then-Premier Jeff Kennett.

In her speech, Allan linked back to the SEC’s history as a training ground and referenced her father’s experience working there as a linesman. “You started young, you got trained, you got qualified, and you built a career for life,” the Guardian quoted the premier. She also described the emotional toll when her father lost his job.

The program aims to address significant workforce shortages and job insecurity in the energy sector. The SEC, as a state-owned company, will take on the training of skilled workers for the state’s energy infrastructure.
