The Ukrainian capital Kyiv was hit by a massive wave of Russian attacks overnight into Sunday. According to authorities, at least four people were killed and more than 50 injured. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that many of the injured had been taken to hospitals. Civil defense released images of destroyed civilian infrastructure and fires.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia used a total of 600 drones and 90 missiles. 549 drones and 55 missiles were intercepted. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the attack as “one of the largest terrorist attacks on Kyiv” since the start of the war. Russia, according to its own statements, again used the Oreshnik intermediate-range missile, which is difficult to intercept due to its high speed.

The wave of attacks followed a Russian threat of retaliation for a Ukrainian strike on a vocational school in the occupied Luhansk region. On Friday, 21 students were killed. The Ukrainian military rejected the accusations and stated that it had attacked a Russian drone command unit. Russia had previously threatened to use the new weapon, which, according to Vladimir Putin, flies at more than ten times the speed of sound and can also be equipped with nuclear warheads.
