The National Museum of Ukraine in Kyiv announced its indefinite closure following the Russian attack on May 24. According to a Facebook post by the museum, the building was damaged by the blast wave of an explosion. Residential buildings and other architectural monuments in the city were also hit.
According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture, staff and the art collection remained unharmed. Experts are currently assessing the extent of the damage. The museum building itself is considered a monument of architecture and monumental art.
Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy Tetiana Berezhna stated: “Russia systematically attacks civilian infrastructure and cultural institutions. Each of these attacks is an attempt to intimidate us and destroy our identity.”
