The Federal Audit Office has sharply criticized the Foreign Office: the authority funded the aid organization Islamic Relief Germany with millions in federal funds, even though the organization is under suspicion of Islamism. This is according to a report cited by Deutschlandfunk.

The German government accuses Islamic Relief Germany of ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. The Federal Audit Office objects that the Foreign Office failed to adequately assess the risks and continued the funding regardless. The Cologne-based organization has received funds for humanitarian projects abroad for years.

As early as 2023, the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs ended its cooperation with Islamic Relief Germany due to Islamism allegations. The Foreign Office, however, continued payments – in the auditors’ view, a serious control failure.

EuroPulse reported on May 23, 2026, about the Federal Audit Office’s reprimand of the Foreign Office regarding the funding of Islamic Relief (link to article).
