Around 1.3 million people in Hamburg are being called to vote today on whether the city should bid to host the Olympic Games. The referendum began this morning, according to Tagesschau.
Hamburg, Munich, Berlin, and the Rhine-Ruhr region centered on Cologne have all expressed interest in hosting the Games. Munich had already voted in favor of a bid in an earlier referendum.
The vote in Hamburg is seen as a bellwether for Germany’s Olympic planning. If a majority votes against a bid, Hamburg would be out of the running as a host city for the time being.
