Germany’s drug commissioner, Streeck (CDU), has called for a significant increase in the tobacco tax on World No Tobacco Day. According to Deutschlandfunk, Streeck demands higher prices for traditional cigarettes and so-called vapes. World No Tobacco Day on May 31 serves as the occasion for the demand.
The German Medical Association supports this course and advocates stricter legal measures. Specifically, it calls for advertising bans to better protect young people from starting to smoke. Both institutions see an urgent need for action in tobacco prevention.
