Hungary Signals End of Veto on EU Accession Talks with Ukraine

Hungary is preparing to lift its long-standing veto on EU accession negotiations with Ukraine. According to the Kyiv Post, the new leadership in Budapest has signaled openness for Kyiv and Chisinau to open the first negotiation chapter on June 15 in Luxembourg.

The move follows recent negotiations on the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine. At a meeting on Monday between Ukrainian and Hungarian experts, the Ukrainian side pledged to address most concerns outlined in an 11-point plan from the Viktor Orbán era, the Kyiv Post reported, citing diplomats.

An unnamed Hungarian official said talks were ongoing and no agreement had been reached yet. No formal decision has been made, but the new leadership in Budapest has privately signaled its intention to lift the veto for both Ukraine and Moldova, allowing the two countries to move forward together.

Under former Viktor Orbán, Hungary had firmly opposed Ukraine’s EU accession. EU ambassadors are now working to adopt a common position by June 15 so that the first round of talks can take place at the intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg. The talks will cover political, legal, and economic reforms needed for accession.

One diplomat made clear that not all Hungarian demands could be met immediately. New laws in Ukraine are not a precondition for opening the first negotiation chapter.
