Lukashenko rules out direct war involvement

Belarusian Alexander Lukashenko said on June 6 in Grodno that Belarusian troops will not take part in combat operations in Ukraine, according to the Kyiv Post. He stated that his compatriots do not want to serve as 'cannon fodder' for someone else's will.

Lukashenko also stressed that Minsk remains a reliable military ally of Russia and is ready to defend it. The statement came amid growing fears that Belarus could serve as a staging ground for a new Russian offensive.

The Belarusian president firmly rejected the idea of sending his citizens to the front. ‘Belarusians do not want to become cannon fodder for someone else’s will,’ the Kyiv Post quoted him as saying. The phrasing echoes earlier statements in which Lukashenko ruled out direct participation in Russia’s war of aggression.

Observers in Kyiv view the declaration with skepticism. Belarus has not deployed its own troops to Ukraine, the country has repeatedly served as a launchpad for Russian missile and drone attacks. Moscow has also stationed tactical nuclear weapons on Belarusian soil.

Ukraine continues to monitor the situation along its northern border closely. The Ukrainian border guard recently warned of possible provocations from Belarus, particularly toward Kyiv and the western regions. A direct invasion by Belarusian troops is considered unlikely.
