UK Justice David Lammy (Labour) has made clear to US Vice President JD Vance in a phone call that his remarks about the murder of Henry Nowak were wrong. Lammy told Sky News on Sunday that he called Vance on Saturday to contradict him. Vance had said on Friday evening that Nowak’s murder was a consequence of the ‘mass invasion of migrants’ and that the only correct response was ‘righteous anger’.

Lammy stressed that the case shows the British justice system works: the perpetrator has been convicted, the police are being reviewed by multiple bodies, and the Attorney General’s Office is examining the sentence. ‘This young man was British. Let’s be clear about that,’ Lammy said. He told Vance: ‘Look, Mr. Vice President, you are wrong on this.’ The conversation ended very amicably, Lammy said.

Vickrum Digwa, 26, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years in December for the murder in Southampton. The Attorney General’s Office is now considering whether the sentence is unduly lenient. Downing Street had previously criticised Vance’s remarks as an attempt to ‘interfere in our democracy and sow division’.

EuroPulse reported on 4 June 2026 on the rejection of the ‘two-tier justice’ claim after the Nowak murder (europulse.today/uk-politics-live-two-tier-justice-nowak/).
