German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has surprisingly spoken out in favor of a German bid for the 2036 Olympic Games. According to Tagesschau, he thus performed a U-turn: until now, he had historical concerns because 2036 falls exactly 100 years after the Olympic Games under the Nazi dictatorship. Steinmeier had previously spoken out against a bid.
Now, however, the president has given the green light. The decision concerns hosting the Games in 2036, which marks the anniversary of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Steinmeier had long seen this historical proximity as an obstacle. With his new course, he paves the way for a possible German candidacy.
