Ukraine is currently experiencing a wave of panic over supposed mass migration from South Asia. As the Kyiv Post reports in an opinion piece, this hysteria is largely driven by disinformation, AI-generated fakes, and far-right fringe groups. Official data, however, shows no significant influx of foreign workers.

Labor shortage, not immigration wave

The country suffers from a severe labor shortage, exacerbated by Russia’s war of aggression. At the same time, a draft law is pending that would ease work permits for foreigners. Experts warn that unchecked xenophobia could trigger future social conflicts if the government does not communicate the actual situation more clearly.

The scaremongering is out of proportion to reality: instead of an “invasion” of migrants, Ukraine lacks workers in key sectors. The government is called upon to counter disinformation with factual information before the mood deteriorates further.
