The number of damaged or destroyed religious sites in Ukraine continues to rise. Citing an NGO assessment, Deutschlandfunk reports that roughly 740 churches, mosques, synagogues, and other houses of worship have been affected by the war. The damage is a direct consequence of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which has been ongoing since February 2022.
The report did not provide a detailed breakdown of the damage by denomination or region. What is clear, however, is that the destruction of religious cultural heritage is a recurring pattern in this war. Many of the affected buildings are located in contested or temporarily occupied areas in eastern and southern Ukraine.
