Fuel shortages have now reached oil-rich Tatarstan in Russia. Long queues are forming at gas stations, local authorities admitted. In response, operator Tatnafta temporarily imposed restrictions: passenger cars get a maximum of 20 liters of gasoline and 40 liters of diesel per day, trucks up to 200 liters of diesel. Authorities justified this with the need to avoid “artificial panic.” Priority for supply goes to industry and municipal services.
The shortages are a direct consequence of Ukrainian attacks on the region. On June 12, Ukrainian forces struck the Taneko refinery of Tatnafta in Nizhnekamsk as well as a second facility operated by TAIF-NK. Both plants are located in the same industrial zone. The Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure aim to disrupt fuel supplies for the Russian army.
