Jens Spahn, the leader of the Union parliamentary group, has called on the SPD to implement the planned working time reform. The reform proposes replacing the daily maximum working time of eight hours with a weekly limit of 48 hours. Spahn argues that this flexibility is necessary to boost the economy.

The reform is controversial, as employers demand more flexibility while unions firmly reject the plans. Spahn emphasized that despite the more flexible rules, both employers and employees must continue to be protected. He reminded that the agreement between the Union and the SPD has already been reached.

The specific design of the reform is to be developed in a dialogue with employers and unions. Critics warn, however, that longer working days could pose health risks, while some employees hope for more flexibility in childcare.
