Ukraine is significantly increasing the production of drones and missiles, according to the British newspaper The Times. At the same time, losses of the Russian armed forces are rising, driving up the cost of the war of aggression for Moscow. According to The Times, the war is thus approaching a decisive point.
The newspaper cites experts saying the Kremlin faces a fundamental choice: either radically increase demands on the economy and society or reduce military goals. The basis for Ukrainian optimism is the assessment that Kyiv is currently killing or permanently incapacitating more Russian soldiers than Moscow can recruit. Ukraine’s military intelligence puts monthly Russian losses at around 30,000 men.
However, The Times points out that the term “losses” also includes wounded soldiers who could later be sent back to the front. Analyst Ruben Stewart from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) confirmed that Ukraine is exerting strong pressure on the Russian army. In some months, Russian losses could exceed recruitment numbers. Stewart warned, however, against already viewing this as a turning point.
A central factor is the massive use of FPV drones. Ukraine has doubled its production target for 2024 from originally 3.5 million to around 7 million drones per year. Russia is also aiming for production of just over 7 million FPV drones. If Ukraine reaches its target, it would neutralize Russia’s previous advantage in this area.
