Iran is questioning its diplomatic talks with the United States. According to Zdfheute, Tehran reacted to Israeli attacks in the Beirut suburbs. Parliament speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf wrote on X: “If you have neither the will nor the ability to fulfill your obligations, then the diplomatic path cannot be continued.”

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also weighed in. An IRGC spokesman announced on state broadcaster Irib: “There is no doubt that these crimes will not go unanswered.” The threat is directed at Israel.

The background to the rift is a red line drawn by Iran: a complete halt to all hostilities, including in Lebanon. The government in Tehran had repeatedly made clear that it would break off talks if this core demand was not met.

Israeli attacks in Lebanon have recently increased. The US is acting as a mediator in talks between Iran and Israel. Whether the desired agreement to end the war will still materialize is now uncertain.
