The attack killed nine people nationwide, including four in Kyiv. Waves of drones and missiles drove residents into subway stations as heavy explosions echoed through the capital. The national Oleksandr Dovzhenko Film Studio, which houses Ukraine’s largest and oldest costume collection, was also hit.
President Volodymyr Zelensky called the strike on the cathedral “one of Russia’s gravest crimes against Christian culture so far” and urged the G7 nations, gathering for their summit in France on Monday, to respond decisively: “More pressure on the aggressor and more support for Ukrainian air defense, especially capabilities to intercept ballistic missiles.”
Russia denied attacking the cathedral, claiming it was struck by a US-made Patriot air defense missile. But on Monday morning, security officials stood outside the monastery complex securing the remnants of two Shahed drones — a clear contradiction to Russia’s account.
