According to the city administration, during the massive shelling on the night of June 15, about 42,000 people, including 3,400 children, took shelter in Kyiv metro stations. 46 underground stations serve as shelters around the clock during air alerts. The stations in the center were particularly busy, while central stations such as Zoloti Vorota, Teatralna, and Maidan Nezalezhnosti were less crowded.

The attack involved a total of 681 aerial targets, of which 632 were intercepted, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. As of 10:30 a.m., five people were reported dead and 34 wounded, including two children. Rescue operations continued.

EU Enlargement Marta Kos said on Facebook that the timing of the attack was no coincidence: it fell on the day Ukraine opened the first negotiation cluster for its EU accession. “The timing of the Russian attack speaks for itself. On the day Ukraine opens its first negotiation cluster with the EU, Moscow once again shows what it fears most: a democratic Ukraine firmly anchored in Europe,” Kos said.
