Ukraine’s leadership has announced a comprehensive reform of the armed forces. According to the BBC, the Defense Ministry and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented the plans on June 12. The changes are intended to bring more transparency and clear rules to the military – a long-standing wish of soldiers, politicians, and society.
But the proposed concept immediately met with criticism and incomprehension. Many see it as exacerbating inequality and injustice within the army. The ministry, which initially had not planned a public presentation, eventually invited journalists to a briefing.
Deputy Defense Minister Mstyslaw Banik tried to explain the reform as “setting clear rules of the game.” However, journalists asked him whether the reform would increase inequality in the military. Banik admitted: “There are no illusions that everything works perfectly here. And there are also no illusions that renaming institutions will immediately make everything run smoothly and satisfy everyone.”
