Construction of Munich’s second S-Bahn trunk line is progressing. According to the Munich, a giant tunnel boring machine is being used that still needs a name. The machine digs meter by meter, almost invisibly, through the underground.
In parallel, so-called flyover structures are being built between Laim and Donnersbergerbrücke to allow the new tracks to branch off from the existing trunk line. To the south, a noise barrier is already being erected. In Laim, three of five cover sections for the environmental combined tube (UVR) have been installed; the remaining ones will follow in August and December.
The cover construction method is complex: up to 200 workers assemble a cover weighing around 500 tons on a scaffold, slide it via a shifting track to its destination, and lower it using hydraulic presses. Afterwards, the connection areas are backfilled and track operations are restored.
