At the G7 summit in Évian, France, US Donald Trump made clear that Iran will never possess nuclear weapons. According to the Guardian, Trump told journalists: ‘The only thing that really matters to me is that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon – and that says it loud and clear.’ He was referring to the agreement with Tehran.

Trump also threatened Iran with massive consequences should the country still pursue nuclear weapons. ‘All hell will break loose in Iran,’ the US President said. However, he ruled out a regime change in Tehran. The agreement is now in its second phase, Trump said.

Benjamin Netanyahu, who is also in Évian, announced he would continue to block Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Trump appeared irritated with Netanyahu but called the relationship with him ‘very effective’ and ‘incredible.’ He stressed that Israel would not exist without his support.

Trump urged Netanyahu to act ‘more responsibly’ in Lebanon. Lebanon, he said, had been ‘treated the worst’ of all countries because it cannot defend itself and must deal with Hezbollah, which Trump called ‘a problem for the country.’

Iran has always insisted its nuclear program is peaceful. The country has not publicly committed to giving up the enriched uranium that, according to US officials, is stored at three nuclear facilities heavily damaged in US strikes last year. Trump is under significant political pressure to negotiate a better deal than the one he abandoned during his first term.

Trump withdrew the US from the 2015 multilateral nuclear deal, negotiated under Barack Obama, in 2018. That deal had lifted sanctions on Tehran in exchange for limits on its nuclear program, including international inspections. Iran responded by ramping up uranium enrichment, producing more than 400 kilograms of material at near-weapons-grade purity. The fate of this uranium is likely to be a central point in upcoming negotiations.
