The black-red coalition has announced a reform package, but a majority of Germans are skeptical. According to the latest ZDF Politbarometer, only 31 percent believe the reforms will be presented by summer. 66 percent do not expect this, representing a decline in doubt compared to late May, when 75 percent were skeptical.
The decisive meeting of the coalition committee is scheduled for June 30, shortly before the parliamentary summer recess. Expectations regarding social insurance are also low: only 24 percent of respondents believe the government will help solve the financial problems.
The survey also shows that 56 percent of Germans favor using more tax revenue for funding, while 14 percent support benefit cuts. 77 percent reject raising the retirement age to 70. 72 percent rate the coalition’s work as rather poor.
