The incident occurred on the afternoon of June 18, 2026, at a school hostel in Aerzen in the Hameln-Pyrmont district. The student, from the Hanover region, suddenly complained of shortness of breath, lost consciousness, and had to be resuscitated. Teachers immediately initiated first aid and received telephone instructions from the emergency control center.
An emergency helicopter was dispatched, but all resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful. Police said that based on the current state of the investigation, there are no indications of third-party involvement. An autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death, a police spokesperson stated.
Around 50 fourth-grade students from a primary school in the Hanover region were supervised by teachers during the emergency and kept away from the rescue efforts. Emergency chaplains provided on-site support for the children and teaching staff. The summer holidays in the region were just around the corner.
