The incident occurred in Göppingen while the woman, who lives alone, was preparing food in her kitchen. The food likely caught fire, sparking the blaze. The two craftsmen, who were working on an adjacent building, were alerted by the woman’s screams.
The 19-year-old climbed through the open kitchen window into the ground-floor apartment, with his 41-year-old colleague forming a backstep to boost him up. He hoisted the woman, who was still standing at the stove, onto his back and carried her through the stairwell to safety. Both men then re-entered the building to warn other residents. They, like the senior, sustained minor smoke inhalation injuries.
All residents were able to leave the building. A total of five people, including the senior, were taken to hospitals, but they have since been discharged. The craftsmen were treated on site, according to a police spokesperson. The senior’s apartment is no longer habitable, while the other residents of the six-unit building have been allowed to return. Police are now investigating the senior on suspicion of negligent arson. The damage is estimated at 100,000 euros.
