Macron and Merz Criticize EU Contacts with Putin

French Emmanuel Macron and German Friedrich Merz have sharply criticized the Union's attempts to establish direct contacts with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, according to Politico. The move deepens divisions within the bloc.

At the EU summit in Brussels, Macron and Merz attacked the approach of European Council President António Costa, who is seeking contacts with the Kremlin. Three people familiar with the matter told Politico that several Eastern European states, as well as Denmark and the Netherlands, supported the criticism. Some even expressed “unprecedented outrage” over Costa’s move.

Kristen Michal said the EU cannot act as a mediator in talks with Russia. The idea of informal diplomatic contacts is wrong, and history has repeatedly shown the danger of negotiations with dictators. The background is that Costa’s chief of staff, Pedro Lourtie, is said to have spoken twice with Moscow representatives in recent weeks.

The debate over the right approach to Putin gained urgency after US Donald Trump reached a preliminary peace agreement with Iran. At the G7 summit, Trump signaled he would refocus on the war in Ukraine.
