Three people familiar with the matter told Politico that several Eastern European states, as well as Denmark and the Netherlands, supported the criticism. Some even expressed “unprecedented outrage” over Costa’s move.

The idea of informal diplomatic contacts is wrong, and history has repeatedly shown the danger of negotiations with dictators. The background is that Costa’s chief of staff, Pedro Lourtie, is said to have spoken twice with Moscow representatives in recent weeks.
The debate over the right approach to Putin gained urgency after US Donald Trump reached a preliminary peace agreement with Iran. At the G7 summit, Trump signaled he would refocus on the war in Ukraine.
