As the FAZ reports, Minister Roman Poseck (CDU) has called for a reversal in drug policy. Cannabis Act of the former traffic-light coalition must be corrected, Poseck said. The black market continues to flourish despite partial legalization, and security authorities are facing growing problems.

Even before the law came into force, security authorities had warned of the consequences. Partial legalization fuels illegal trade, as dealers carry amounts just under the permitted limit of 25 grams. There is also a risk that young people may perceive cannabis consumption as harmless.

Poseck introduced his initiative at the Conference of Interior Ministers. He advocates for a ban on cannabis consumption in public. The debate comes at a time when cities like Cologne and Düsseldorf are considering allowing so-called micro-trade in hard drugs – a step Poseck rejects. “Just because the state feels helpless, legal boundaries must not be shifted,” the FAZ quotes the minister.

The FAZ draws a clear conclusion: the legalization project has failed. It is now up to the current federal government to draw the consequences and revise the law. The discussion must be steered toward a responsible drug policy that does not oscillate between combating international drug trafficking and turning a blind eye to local scenes.
