The 37-year-old from Pinneberg rode her horse Nickel through the cross-country course on Saturday, incurring only four penalty points for exceeding the optimum time. This extended her lead in the four-star competition, which also counts as the German championship. “It was a very smooth, good round. Nickel has been here in Luhmühlen many times and knows what to do. But tomorrow is a new day,” Krajewski said in an NDR interview.
Her closest rival for the title, team European champion Malin Hansen-Hotopp from Gransebieth (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania), is already far behind with 33.8 points. Belgian rider Lara de Liedekerke-Meier moved into second place overall with Kiarado d’Arville (31.3). Krajewski can become German champion for the fifth time in Sunday’s final jumping phase. “If you get used to being German champion, something is wrong,” the Olympic champion said.
The traditional tournament in Lower Saxony also serves as preparation for the Eventing World Championship, which takes place from August 13 to 16 as part of the World Equestrian Games in Aachen. National coach Peter Thomsen cannot attend in person – he is in hospital after a riding accident. In Luhmühlen, he is represented by team manager Annette Wyrwoll, among others.
