Mateusz Przybylko, who became European champion in Berlin in 2018, is hanging up his spikes. The Bayer Leverkusen athlete will be bid farewell by the athletics scene at the Essen jumping meeting this evening, as the club announced. The 34-year-old crowned his career in 2018 at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, where he won gold with a jump of 2.35 meters.

That same year, Przybylko also secured bronze at the World Indoor Championships. The multiple German champion and Olympic participant suffered repeated health setbacks in the following years that slowed him down. He was very popular with fans for his fighting spirit and his ability to energize the crowd.
