The state party congress of the Bremen CDU voted overwhelmingly for Wiebke Winter as its top candidate. The 30-year-old parliamentary group leader received around 92 percent of the votes cast. Winter aims to become Bremen’s first female head of government in the state election next spring.
In her speech, Winter urged her party to embrace change. “I stand here because I have seen too often in Bremen that the courage to get going was lacking,” she said. Bremen has the highest poverty rate, the highest unemployment rate, and ranks last in education rankings nationwide. “I no longer want to accept that,” she said. She announced plans to focus on security, digitalization, reducing bureaucracy, and reliable childcare. She ruled out any cooperation with the AfD.
Winter was born in Kiel and grew up in Bremen. The lawyer with a doctorate has been a member of the CDU federal executive board since 2021 and is a co-founder of the Climate Union. Winter has been a member of the Bremen state parliament for three years and has led the CDU parliamentary group for one year.
