The 48-year-old from Lower Bavaria received more than 79 percent of the vote. Earlier, Mixl had declared his candidacy hopeless after a motion to deny Protschka the right to deliver his activity report failed. Instead, the delegates granted Protschka the right to speak by a clear majority and denied his opponents on the board discharge.

Mixl’s camp secured three assessor positions in backroom negotiations. His supporters include right-wing extremists such as state lawmakers Franz Schmid and Rene Dierkes, as well as Ulrich Singer. The deputy leaders elected were European Parliament member Markus Buchheit, co-faction leader Katrin Ebner-Steiner, and state lawmaker Gerd Mannes.

Protschka, who comes from the officially dissolved ethnic-nationalist wing, appeared conciliatory toward internal party opponents at the congress, but not toward the Union. He called Friedrich Merz a “lying Fritz.” Ebner-Steiner shouted: “If we Bavarians stick together, we will not only beat the devil out of hell, but also kick Söder out of the state chancellery.”
