Zelenskyy said Nawrocki is fighting for the post of prime minister and wants to secure a victory for his party over Premier Donald Tusk. “We have nothing to do with this, it is their internal affair,” Zelenskyy stated. Nawrocki is stoking hatred against Ukrainians to reap political dividends – a tactic that Zelenskyy said reminds him of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. “This is a bad story. I believe it will end badly,” the Ukrainian president warned.
During their first meeting in Poland, Nawrocki gave Zelenskyy a book about the Volhynia tragedy. “I did not make that public at the time. Now I am speaking openly about it because he is taking steps that I consider wrong,” Zelenskyy said. He called on Polish society to maintain relations with Ukraine, which is currently defending Europe – including Poland.
The background to the revocation of the order is Zelenskyy’s decision to name a Ukrainian unit after the “Heroes of the UPA.” Nawrocki had stated that for the majority of Poles, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) remains a formation responsible for crimes against Poles during World War II. Zelenskyy sent the order back to Warsaw by courier. Former presidents Leonid Kuchma, Viktor Yushchenko, and Petro Poroshenko also returned their orders.
