Leandro Trossard lay on the grass in great pain, the Belgian national team’s medical staff stood ready – but help never came. During the World Cup group match against Iran, the Belgian player declined treatment. The reason: a new rule at the football World Cup.
Iranian player Alireza Jahanbakhsh had stepped hard on Trossard’s calf. The sock was torn, the stud mark clearly visible on his lower leg. Referee Dario Herrera from Argentina, however, did not show a yellow card. Had Trossard been treated, he would have had to leave the field for one minute.
Exempt from this rule are only goalkeepers and players injured by a foul that resulted in a yellow or red card.
