The Egyptian national team celebrated its first World Cup win in history. The “Pharaohs” defeated New Zealand 3-1 (0-1) in Vancouver and took the lead in Group G.

New Zealand had taken the lead through Finn Surman (14th minute) after a corner by Tim Payne. After the break, Egypt turned the game around: Mostafa Ziko headed the equalizer in the 58th minute in front of 52,497 spectators. Mohamed Salah scored from Ziko’s assist to make it 2-1, and substitute Trézéguet sealed the win (82nd minute).

With four points, Egypt has excellent chances of advancing to the round of 32. A point in the final group match against Iran on Saturday (5:00 a.m. CET) would be enough. New Zealand faces Belgium, which has only one point so far after a draw against Egypt.
