The demonstration was held under the motto “From Grief to Anger and Resistance – Demo against Fascist Violence in Göttingen.” Police reported on Monday evening that there were no incidents during the march through the city center. Already on Sunday evening, around 600 people had spontaneously gathered at Albaniplatz to protest against right-wing extremist violence.
The 23-year-old was hit in the head by a sharp object over the weekend and critically injured. Investigators found a knife on a 17-year-old suspect that could be the murder weapon. DNA traces on it are still being examined. The 17-year-old was provisionally arrested on Sunday in Göttingen’s eastern district but was released again in the evening.
The public prosecutor’s office stated that the teenager may have acted in self-defense. Witness statements and the proximity of the crime scene to the suspect’s home indicated this, according to Senior Public Prosecutor Frank-Michael Laue. Therefore, there is no urgent suspicion that would justify an arrest warrant. The 17-year-old initially exercised his right to refuse to testify.
The victim was out of life-threatening danger and in stable condition on Monday but was not yet able to be questioned. When questioning would be possible remained unclear according to the prosecutor’s office. Police had not ruled out a politically motivated background from the start and involved the state security service. According to NDR information, the 23-year-old is believed to belong to the left-wing spectrum. A statement from his circle says he was not seeking violence.
