In the top match of Group J, Messi sealed the victory with his brace. The superstar missed a penalty in the ninth minute but scored in the 38th minute to make it 1-0, surpassing Klose. He added a second in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Messi now has 18 World Cup goals.

The Austrians never fully contained the superstar. Marcel Sabitzer missed the best chance to take the lead in the 23rd minute, and after the break, Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez made a spectacular save from a Sabitzer free kick.

With the win, Argentina is assured of a place in the round of 32. Klose immediately congratulated him, telling the Süddeutsche Zeitung: “Lionel Messi is the best footballer of all time in my eyes! Congratulations, champion!”
