DGB chief Fahimi rejects key pension commission recommendations

Yasmin Fahimi, chair of the German Trade Union Federation (DGB), has rejected central recommendations from the pension commission. Instead of raising the retirement age or cutting pension levels, she calls for stabilizing the system through more contributors.

The expert recommendations from the pension commission are about to be handed over to the federal government. Fahimi told the Ronzheimer podcast: “Fundamentally, the discussion about the retirement age is not helpful.” Instead, she said, ways must be found “to get people into retirement healthy, or at least reasonably able to work.”

Fahimi also called the recommended abolition of a penalty-free retirement for particularly long-term insured workers a mistake. “The recommendation is not fair,” she said. The commission has presented 33 reform proposals, including raising the retirement age and introducing a capital-funded pension. The coalition must decide on implementation.
