The study for the redevelopment of the stadium on Grünwalder Straße was presented to residents and members over the weekend. The arena is to be suitable for the first division and offer space for 25,000 spectators as well as 2,000 expensive VIP seats. The first target for the renovation is 2030.

The project is met with goodwill in city politics. Mayor Dominik Krause (Greens) said: ‘I don’t know the plans yet, but I think it’s good that the residents were involved so early.’ He pointed to the challenges regarding noise protection. Sports mayor Verena Dietl (SPD) also does not want to dampen the euphoria for now. She has long maintained contact with those responsible at the Lions within the city leadership, and now she wants to start the further process for the renovation.

Financing is still open. The city estimates well over 100 million euros for the plans. In 2022, the city council had already approved 77 million euros for a renovation, but TSV 1860 rejected it at the time. Since then, the financial situation of the club and the city has worsened. Munich will have nearly ten billion euros in debt by the end of the year. Mayor Krause and Dietl see the bid for the Olympic Games as a possible financing factor.
