The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have largely destroyed Obeid’s infrastructure with near-daily attacks. Electricity, fuel, and water supplies have collapsed, a spokesman for the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) told dpa. The city in North Kordofan is controlled by the army, and leaving is still possible.
The United Nations (UN) is alarmed. The UN Security Council, the United States, and European countries including Germany have expressed concern. Foreign ministers from several nations warned of a repeat of the atrocities seen in Fashir, where at least 6,000 people fell victim to massacres, according to the UN. UN and US representatives spoke by phone with RSF militia leader Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, urging him to refrain from an attack.
