The two German nationals were arrested in Thuringia. The Karlsruhe-based authority accuses them of attempted murder, attempted arson resulting in death, and attempted aggravated arson as accomplices. Both are in pretrial detention.

The arrests took place on Wednesday and Thursday in the Altenburger Land district and in Gera. Officers from the Federal Criminal Police Office and Thuringian police forces were involved. An investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice issued the arrest warrants.

The suspects are accused of attempting to set fire to an inhabited asylum shelter in Schmölln in early January 2025. The group smashed a window and tried to shoot ignited pyrotechnics into the building using a firework battery. However, no fire broke out.

The ‘Letzte Verteidigungswelle’ has been under scrutiny by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office for some time. In May 2025, five suspected followers were arrested, and three others were already in custody. All eight are now on trial before the Higher Regional Court in Hamburg. A nationwide raid against the group took place in mid-March.
