The Federal Prosecutor’s Office accuses the two teenagers of attempted murder and attempted arson resulting in death, among other charges. They are alleged to have tried to set fire to an occupied asylum shelter in Schmölln, Thuringia, in early January 2025, together with accomplices. The group smashed a window and attempted to shoot pyrotechnics ignited with a firework battery into the building. However, no fire broke out.

The suspects were arrested on Wednesday and Thursday in the Altenburger Land district and in Gera. An investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice executed the arrest warrants. The ‘Last Defense Wave’ has been in the sights of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office for some time. In May 2025, five suspected members of the group were arrested, and three others were already in pretrial detention. All eight are now on trial before the Hamburg Higher Regional Court.

According to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, the group sees itself as the last resort for defending the ‘German nation.’ Its goal is to bring about the collapse of the democratic system through violent acts against migrants and political opponents. The members planned to trigger a ‘race war’ to eliminate liberal democracy.
