Alstom has decided not to appeal the award procedure for the Berlin S-Bahn, the company said. Theoretically, the company still had until the end of Friday to file a complaint with the Kammergericht. If Alstom refrains from doing so as announced, the contract is likely to go to a consortium of Deutsche Bahn, Stadler and Siemens. Transport Senator Ute Bonde (CDU) called it a great success for Berlin and its passengers. The procurement process for new S-Bahn trains can now be initiated immediately. The head of Berlin’s S-Bahn, Heiko Büttner, called it good news for everyone in Berlin and Brandenburg.
Alstom had filed an objection with the procurement chamber against the Senate’s decision from last year but lost there a few weeks ago. Since then, it was unclear whether the train builder would appeal. The largest public transport tender in Europe involves a contract volume of around 15 billion euros. It covers the operation of S-Bahn lines on the Stadtbahn and the north-south connection from the 2030s for 15 years. It also includes the delivery of 1,400 new cars and vehicle maintenance for 30 years. Not included is the operation on the Ringbahn. The tender has been running since 2020 but was repeatedly delayed.
