Left Party co-leader Luigi Pantisano accused the federal government of gambling with the pensions of millions of workers. The capital pension was a disgrace, Pantisano said in the current affairs debate requested by his parliamentary group. Instead, he called for strengthening company pensions.

SPD pension commission member Annika Klose countered that company pension schemes also rely on capital market returns. CDU lawmaker Pascal Reddig, also a commission member, advocated for the capital pension and pointed to Sweden, where annual returns of eleven percent had been achieved despite crises. For Germany, the commission had conservatively assumed five percent, which could bring a young average earner an additional 770 euros in retirement.

The current affairs debate served as an initial political sounding. The federal government must now turn the pension commission’s 33 recommendations into concrete legislative changes, which are to follow after the summer break.
